Waste cost calculator: what your flower shop throws away, in euros

Updated 2026-10-06 · Priroda Tech, Vigo

A flower shop's waste is felt but not measured: a few wilted stems every day, one bucket too many on Monday, the chrysanthemums left over on 2 November. This calculator puts an annual number on that feeling, from what you buy a week and the share that never sells. Free and no sign-up.

What goes in the bin, in euros

What you buy in flowers each week and the share that wilts or breaks without selling. If you do not know it, 10 to 20 % is usual in a shop that buys by eye.

€0Flowers thrown away per week (at cost)
€0Per year, at cost
€0Sales those flowers would have made
€0What you save a year at your target

Lost sales = flowers thrown away × (1 + markup). Cutting waste starts with knowing what is thrown away: write off every stem with its reason, and buy against what open orders need.

What it calculates

The flowers thrown away per week, at their purchase cost, times the weeks you open, is what you lose a year in goods. But those flowers were bought to sell at a markup, so the sales they would have made are larger. The last figure is what you save if you bring waste down from the current share to the one you aim for.

How to use it

  1. Put in what you spend on flowers a week, before VAT.
  2. Estimate the share that ends up wilted or broken without selling. If you have never measured it, 10 to 20 % is usual in a shop that buys by eye.
  3. Put in your markup on cost and the share you would like to reach.
  4. Read what you throw away a year, the sales that meant and what you save at the target.

Who it is for

The shop that buys "as always" and does not know how much of it comes back; the one that wants a reason to buy against orders before a peak day; and the one that already measures waste and wants to see what five points less are worth.

From the figure to cutting it

Waste comes down when it is known: what is thrown away, when and why. In Priroda every wilted stem is written off with a reason, the stock goes down and the waste report shows the loss per period at cost; stock requirements compare what open orders need with what is in the cooler, and what is missing becomes a purchase request, not a purchase by eye. It is told in Stock control for flower shops and in Closing the day's cash and writing off wilted flowers.

Frequently asked questions

What share of waste is normal?

It depends on the flower, the cooler and how you buy. Shops that buy against orders and rotate stock tend to stay under 10 %; those that buy by eye, above. The useful number is yours, measured.

Does waste count in the bouquets' margin?

Yes, even if unseen: the flowers thrown away were paid for by the margin on the flowers sold. That is why the multiplier on fresh flowers is high. Measuring it is the first step to needing less margin.

Does it keep my data?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and sends nothing.
